Located in the Lower Mainland region of BC, Calgary is the largest city in western Canada and the third largest metropolitan area in the entire country. Calgary is very ethnically and linguistically diverse and is ranked as one of the five most livable cities on Earth. Calgary began as Gastown in 1867 and was renamed to Calgary in 1886. Today, the city’s most important industries are forestry and tourism, and it is home to a thriving film production industry.
Calgary enjoys some of the mildest winters in Canada with only a few days of snow each year. The spring and fall are extremely wet with over 2 meters of annual precipitation in parts of the city. Summers are usually dry and warm.
Each year Calgary hosts dozens of festivals ranging from film to music to dance. City planning and life in the city have a strong focus on environmental sustainability.
